Sacramento Dental Mouthguards
The use of a properly fitted mouthguard [is] the best available protective device for reducing the incidence and severity of sports-related dental injuries. – American Dental Association (ADA)
A mouthguard is a device that protects your teeth and gums from injury. Before dentistry made mouthguards available to athletes everywhere, injuries to the teeth, mouth and gums in boxing, football and other sports were commonplace. Mouthguards also protect the teeth from damage due to teeth grinding or temporomandibular disorders (TMJ). Some types of custom-made mouthguard can even be created in our own Sacramento office, guaranteeing a fast turnaround time to meet your protective needs.
Mouthguards for Sports
The ADA recommends mouthguards for more than twenty-five different sports. Playing recreational or competitive sports without a mouthguard means you are twice as likely to suffer an injury to your teeth or the soft tissues of your mouth. While “boil and bite” mouthguards are readily available at your local sporting goods store, anyone who has used these “do it yourself” mouthguards can tell you that the fit is loose and far from secure. That’s why dental reports have shown that the protection offered by a custom made mouthguard is superior to any sort of “one size fits all” mouthpiece.
Mouthguards made by the Sacramento Dentistry Group start with an impression of your teeth. That impression is then used to construct a mouthguard out of durable resin. This mouthguard fits your teeth perfectly, so there’s no looseness and you can speak normally. With proper care, your mouthguard can last for more multiple seasons of active sports.
Mouthguards for Bruxism
Bruxism is the dental term for teeth grinding. For most patients, this problem takes place at night. For a few, stress disorders or TMJ may lead to teeth grinding during the day. While the treatment varies from person to person, the importance of protecting your enamel from the destructive forces caused by clenching your jaw and “gritting your teeth” is obvious!
A custom made mouthguard is the solution to the damage created by bruxism. Also called “night guards,” since they are usually worn while sleeping, or “occlusal splints” and “occlusal guards,” these devices fit perfectly onto the teeth. Your speech should not be significantly affected while wearing it, especially since the mouthguard is custom fit. For some patients, simply wearing the mouthguard regularly is enough to calm the teeth grinding episodes. Many patients report an end to regular morning jaw pain as a result of wearing a custom made mouthguard when they sleep.
